Isadora Spohr Krummenauer

Expanding the scene: the work of atmosphere in the scripts of “Boi Neon”, “Madalena” and “Temporada”.

Independent

Through cinematographic and textual analysis, the work aims to investigate the concept of
cinematic atmosphere and its potential contribution to creating non-classic ways of narrating a
story. The objective is to understand how the atmosphere imparts meanings and how it can
shape the cinematographic experience in three Brazilian scripts: “Boi Neon” (Gabriel
Mascaro, 2015), “Madalena” (Madiano Marcheti, 2021), and “Temporada” (André Novais
Oliveira, 2020).

Building upon Inês Gil’s atmospheric studies, the dissertation analyzes the influence of filmic
atmosphere on scene composition, providing insights for narrative construction. In the process
of scene creation, the study considers the role of manuals, such as those by McKee, Field, and
Douglas, alongside the perspective of classic narrative proposed by Bordwell, as references
for thoughtful reflection.

The investigation extends to the analysis of selected non-dramatic scenes. Through the lens of
montage theory, drawing from the perspectives of Eisenstein and Pudovkin, the study
explores how montage functions as a compositing tool capable of enhancing the aesthetic
experience. This understanding is then applied to manifesting the filmic atmosphere within
the script.

The work also engages with other authors, including Coral Cruz, who contribute to the idea of
“writing images” to shape the symbolism of each story.
